Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then found multiple other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to solve the case" and have requested to the community for tips.
A senior political figure commented the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
